■質問①：志を作っていこと、何をやりたいのかということを考えていく上で何かヒントはないか？

現在、「起業家リーダーシップ」というクラスを教えている。ここでは、様々な起業家や日本の偉人を研究した上で、「自分自身の任務」ということを考え発表してもらう。その時点での自分が考えていることを一度まとめてみると発見があるのではないかと思っている。

また、それ以外に「経営道場」という場で様々な本を受講生と一緒に読んでいる。その中で自分なりの考え方とか価値観とか生き方について考えていく。そのような議論の中に実は気付きがあるのではないかと思っている。

では、そもそも「志」とは何か。
多摩大の野田先生が「志は3つの要素でできている。1つは自分にとって壮大であること。2つめは多くの人を感動させる、わくわくさせること。そして、3つめは、やるということを事前に意思決定すること」とおっしゃった。
私は最後が一番大切だと思っている。多くの人は思うだけでやっていない。

私はアジアNo.1のビジネススクールを作るということをすでに意思決定をした。シンガポールにはインシアード、日本には一橋や国際大学もある。できるかどうかわからない。勘違いで終わってしまうかもしれない。でも、「志」として私はやると決めたのだ。その志に向けてチャレンジし続けていきたい。

　

　

　

　

■質問②：名古屋でも大学院をやっていくのか？

将来的には東京、大阪、名古屋、福岡の4つにシティーキャンパスを創る。そこで、GDBA（グロービスMBA）を提供できるようにしたい。また、山の中にフルタイムキャンパスを創り、英語でプログラムも提供したい。名古屋でやるのは間違いない。ただ、タイミングは今議論しているところ。

■質問③：ビジョンに向けて、着実に進んでいると思っているか？

昨年の日経産業新聞のビジネススクールランキングでは3位に入った。国から助成金をもらって運営している大学をむこうに回しても、クオリティを評価いただけている。

もちろん、軌道修正もあった。当初は上場目指そうと思っていた。数年前に、量ではなく質を追求しようと考えて上場を選択しなかった。今はシェアホルダーの大半は従業員。

それでどれぐらい満足しているかというとかなり満足している。30年計画で創業したので、残り17年間ある。17年後どうなっているのかわからないか、やれるだけやっていこうと思っている。

　

　

　

　

■質問④：創業のときに不安に思ったことは何か？

創業する時に「お前は住友商事の看板があるからこれまで仕事ができているんだよ。あいつを見てみろ、あいつを見てみろ、飛び出してベンチャーをやっているやつはみんな失敗している。」ということを言われた。とても、不安だった。日本は失敗したら自己破産になる。信用も失ってしまう。みんなから失敗したと思われてレッテルを貼られてしまう。

不安に思ってもしょうがないので、僕は失敗した事例を徹底的に調べてみた。すると、社会から後ろ指さされているのはウソをついたり逃げたりしている経営者だった。

そして、正しいと思うことをオープンにコミュニケーションをしていけば社会はそんなに冷たくはないのではないか、社会を信頼してもいいのではないか、と結論付けた。それで一歩踏み出すことができた。

■質問⑤：創業後の失敗はあるか？

資金面では当初不安があった。92年に創業し93年8月に結婚して新婚旅行から帰ってきたら、社員に9月25日に給与を払うお金がないという状態になっていた。もちろん、金策に走った。また、それではなく、もっと多くの方々に受講してもらう方法はないかと考えた。そのためには認知度を上げる必要があるということで、広告を出した。打って出たのだ。それが功を奏してなんとか乗り越えることができた。

私は3つの側面で起業に携わっている。グロービスを創業したという起業家という立場、ベンチャーキャピタリストという立場、ベンチャーに関する本を書いているという起業研究家という立場の3つ。
いろいろと研究していくと、アイディア以上にリーダーやチームの力がかなり重要であると思っている。

■質問⑦：起業家を目指す人は持って生まれる才能か？

起業の才能は、後天的なモノか、先天的なモノなのかはわからない。30%ぐらいは生まれ持ったもので、70%は後天的に変えられると思う。つまり、努力のファクターも大きいと思う。だから、70%を伸ばせるのだと信じて、自分を改善していくことがよいのではないか。

■質問⑧：経営者としての人間性を磨く上で、グロービスの経営以外で何か余暇でやることは？

僕は経営学に関する本のかなりの部分を読んでいると思う。それ以外でも科学や心理学等の本を読んだり、囲碁で学んだりしている。また、子供も4人いて、さらにもう1人今月生まれる予定。そのような家族からも学んでいる。

ビジネスは多くの人たちが賛同して一緒に動いていかなければならない。幅広い経験を持たねばならないし、幅の広い発想を持つ必要がある。

バランスよく生きていくことがいいのではないかと思う。
