「マッキンゼー経営の本質」を読む。ぜひ読みたいと思っていた本だったのだが、ついつい後回しになっていた本である。休日の時間を使い、読み終えることができた。
この本はマッキンゼーを50年以上に渡ってリードし、世界的なコンサルティング会社に育てたマービン・バウワー氏による書である。同氏は、マッキンゼーというコンサルティング会社だけではなく、現代のプロフェッショナル・コンサルティング・ファームのあり方を築いた一人である。プロフェッショナル、ファクトベースコンサルティング、トップマネジメントアプローチという3つの概念をコンサルティング業界に導入したことからそう言われている。
そのバウワー氏が多種多様な企業を見ている中で、経営とは何をすることなのか、ということを突き詰めて考え出した経営論をまとめられている。
この本の原題は「The Will to Manage」である。直訳すれば、「経営への意思」である。この本では経営戦略や戦略を実現するための行動指針・手順の描き方、優れた組織の作り方、経営幹部の役割、リーダーシップなどについて触れられているが、原書のタイトルのように一番重要視され、強調されているのが「経営への意思」である。
バウワー氏は最初にこのように語る。「優秀な創業者や後継者たちが脱落してしまうのは、経営の意思が欠けているからではないだろうか」。また、さらに、「成功を目指す決意と、経営に向き合う決意とははっきり違う。」とも言う。
では、バウワー氏の考える「経営への意思」とは何か。
氏は「経営とは組織の目標を定め、人材をはじめとする資源をその目標達成への導いていくこと」と経営について定義している。
そして、「経営への意思」については、ある会社のCEOの言葉を引用し説明している。その言葉とは「我々は事業が拡大するがままに任せるのではなく、会社の成長を自らの手で統制しようと決意した」というものである。
つまり、事業の伸長・好不調に振り回されるのではなく、自分たちが事業の舵取りをすることこそが経営への意思である、ということである。
経営への意思を実現するためには「CEOは社員全員が会社の目標達成に貢献するような仕組みを作り、会社に関与する全ての人がその仕組みを理解し、プロセス同士のつながりを把握するように仕向けていくことが必要になる」と語っている。
さらに、経営において仕組みを作る重要性を以下のように述べている。「経営システムが整った会社では、個人プレーに依存しない。大勢の人を鼓舞できるような人物がいるにこしたことはないが、いなくても十分にやっていける。と言うのも、経営システムの各要素が行動指針の役割を果たしてくれるからだ。」と言う。
同書の内容は、上記のように経営者（マネジャー）が行うべき活動だけではなく、あるべき「経営への意思」について説明がなされている。改めてあるべき経営のあり方やその方法論を考えるには非常に良い本である。
